Color: Typically appears as a pale grey to off-white, or sometimes a very light yellowish-white. It’s generally lighter in color than unrefined shea or mango butter.

Texture/Consistency: This is one of its most defining features. At room temperature, Kokum butter is very hard, brittle, and flaky. It has a firm, waxy texture that often breaks or shatters when pressure is applied, rather than creaming or softening like shea or mango butter. It’s often compared to cocoa butter in terms of hardness.

Melting Point: It boasts a very high melting point (one of the highest among natural butters), typically around 38∘C to 40∘C (100∘F to 104∘F). This means it remains solid even in warmer climates and melts only on contact with skin or higher temperatures, making it excellent for firm balms and sticks.

Absorption: Despite its hardness, once it melts on the skin, it’s known for its light, non-greasy feel and quick absorption. It leaves a smooth, dry, powdery, or satin-like finish without feeling heavy or sticky.

Aroma: It has a very mild to virtually odorless scent. This makes it an excellent choice for formulations where you don’t want any competing natural aroma, allowing added fragrances or essential oils to dominate.

Appearance (when solid): Often appears as solid blocks, chunks, or flakes. It might look opaque and sometimes slightly crystalline or powdery on the surface due to its hard, brittle nature.

Spreadability: Due to its hardness, it’s not easily spreadable directly from the solid state like softer butters. It requires warming between the hands or melting to be applied smoothly.
